My brother’s brother-in-law, Cory Williams, directed this video. Cory is probably best known for his “Mean Kitty” video.

Friday’s Bulleted List
In no particular order!
- The Lost Postcast with Jay & Jack: “Save Log-Carrying Guy!”
- Jedi Gym. Just watch.
- Preparing the Battlefield, by Seymour Hersh in the New Yorker. Hersh’s latest on Bush and Co’s intent to go to war with Iran. Hersh’s interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air can be listened to here.
- From the Archives: Radical Orthodoxy and the Church: A Roundtable Discussion (via). This was a roundtable discussion from the 2003 Reformed Tradition and Radical Orthodoxy conference. It wasn’t included in the book, but Jamie Smith has provided it here.
- From Bruce Ellis Benson, a couple of lists of secondary resources on Kierkegaard and Nietzsche. Benson also has a recent book on Nietzsche entitled Pious Nietzsche: Decadence and Dionysian Faith.
- Okay, I think I totally love puzzle games. Take this one, for instance: Ancient Quest of Saqqarah. If you’ve been following me at all on Twitter, you’ll know that I’ve been playing this one this week. I am waiting a bit to play Puzzle Quest because I’ve heard it’s just so damn good.
- Generous Orthodoxy Thinktank has shut down. I had a lot of helpful conversations on there back in the day.
- Hauerwas to vote for Obama (via). Also see “Cocktail Party” links on this and related topics on Lee’s post here (note: the cocktail party happened before Jonathan linked to the Hauerwas-to-vote-for-Obama link).
- DJW over at Ipsum Esse has been posting some helpful commentary on Francesca Murphy’s recent God Is Not a Story, high-lighting Murphy’s critiques of what she calls the “grammatical Thomists” (post 1, post 2, post3).
- I can’t really draw, but I absolutely love Skineart.com.
Nazbo Rap Strikes Back
As a follow up to the first “Nazbo Rap” made 2 years ago, I present to you “Nazbo Rap II.” This was released yesterday. Most of this video was shot on the PLNU campus and in the First Church Eclipse Chapel, and was made by current PLNU undergrads. I’d be interested to see a list of credits. It’s catchy, well-edited, but of course, dripping with ridiculous cheese! There’s some weird stuff here and there, but it’s entertaining nonetheless.
Forgive us our debtp-tahs!
We recently begun singing the Lord’s Prayer in our liturgy at church. This video captures the hilarity of our finitude as I think only 1 in 50 people actually has the vocal range to sing this song without straining!
“We cannot use language maturely until we are spontaneously at home in irony”
Wait, Socrates was white?!
Where is my mind?
Well, obviously, I wasn’t able to make it to the theological symposium on the Analogia Entis. In being buried underneath thesis work, I kind of forgot about it, which is probably for the best. It’s starting today and goes to Sunday. Anyway, aside from Joel Garver, did anybody else go? I’d love to hear a report.
For those that actually hop over to my blog to read (and not just RSS), I’ve updated a few things. I had to tweak the current theme to put the ‘pages’ back into the header (about me, papers, thesis reading books, etc.). I also added a few feeds in the sidebar: one to my dorky Facebook status updates, and one to my Tumblr blog of things I’ve been reading/watching lately.
Music-wise, I’ve been dipping back into my CD collection and listening to things that I haven’t listened to in quite some time to help keep me stimulated during the writing process:
- Squarepusher – Big Loada
- Alice in Chains – Unplugged (probably one of my favorite albums of all time, actually. where were you?!)
- VNV Nation – Matter + Form (hands-down my favorite VNVN album but for some reason it fell out of my usual rotation.)
- Mayfairgrin – Equine Noir: The Ambient Selections (probably my favorite moody ambient album ever. you can hop over to my last.fm page and see how many times I’ve listened to this gem in the past few years.)
- 30 Seconds to Mars – A Beautiful Lie (now, I understand why a lot of people don’t like this band as it is one of the quintessential emo rock bands, but I absolutely love this album and really think Jared Leto’s voice is awesome. I usually play this on repeat after 11pm when things start to drag for me during paper writing.)
- Nirvana – Nevermind and In Utero (just classic 90’s fun)
- Apoptygma Berzerk – Welcome to Earth and Harmonizer (still not a fan of their stuff post-Harmonizer though… )
Of all the April Fool’s gags I saw online, this one was probably my favorite: World of Warcraft: Molten Core.
I recently got new glasses. The last time I got a pair of corrective lenses was my freshman year of highschool. I had contacts for a while after that and used them for a while but got lazy. I can now see road signs!
Minimal update: I fixed a grip of typos in this post… I was up till 4am last night so I am a bit out of it.
The Zany Elf Antics Continue to Ensue!
My brother Andrew, sister-in-law LaRae, niece Phaedra, and doggy-in-law Hermes: Elfed.
My brother-in-law Stephen, wife Shannon, kitty Fanny: Elfed.
Myself, my brother Andrew, my sister Jenna: ElfedX0red.
Jimmy Kell, my sis-in-law Shalina Reinhardt, and our niece Katie: Elfished.
Why is this so funny?
I don’t know much…
…about sports, but does this qualify as cool?
Back to readin Van Inwagen…
This just in: brief quippy snark edition
From a movie synopsis of Dragon Wars that I saw in my Google Calendar movie widget:
Ethan Kendrick (Jason Behr) is a TV reporter called on to investigate an ancient legend about giant monsters destroying the planet. As Ethan delves into the case, he discovers that the story isn’t just a legend — it’s true! Giant dragons descend on modern-day Los Angeles to wreck havoc and while the military is no match for the mighty creatures, Ethan finds out that a young girl may hold the key to end the destruction.
DRAGONS ARE TRUE!!!
From a review of the recently-released modo 301, a 3D modeling program:
Luxology gets high marks for this release. The new features are polished and useful, as are the workflow improvements. To go with an admittedly semi-lame car analogy for a moment: modo 301 doesn’t necessarily feel like a brand new model (good thing: as modo was in great shape already), but it does feel like it has gotten a shiny new coat of speckled lacquer paint, some new low profile, high traction tires and a freshly polished, digitally tricked out dashboard.
Uhm.
Brief Thought
Although I could most definitely look this up on IMDB.com, what is LeVar Burton doing these days? I remember him in Roots, the television show-for-kids Reading Rainbow, and then his ascent to nerd-dom as LaForge in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the various movie spin-offs. I’m just sayin’: I kind of miss that guy.
Avocado: it’s what’s for dinner

I don’t often link to paintings on this blog, but today’s painting from Duane Keiser of my most beloved San Diego staple is wonderfully delicious.
Lesson Learned
This is mainly for any of the webadmin types out there, specifically those who setup discussion forums on websites. This embarrassing tale concerns PHPBB, the very popular free bulletin board system.
On Saturday night, I started receiving e-mail warnings from my web host, telling me that my bandwidth limit had almost hit the monthly limit. This was a bit odd considering the fact that that particular server gets relatively little traffic. There are a couple of blogs hosted on it, but that is about it. The main site itself is not used by anybody.
After some digging, I discovered that about 24 gigs of bandwidth was used, and mostly by a Google bot. I’ve not known Google bots to be terribly malicious, but then after further analysis of my web stats, I noticed that most of the search terms were pretty disgusting combinations of porn terms. Then, I saw that the most accessed page on that site was “/forum/viewtopic.php”.
Uh-oh.
When I went to check out the forum that I had installed a couple of years ago on there, I was shocked to see that it had been completely overrun with complete trash. All eight or so of the forum categories had thousands and thousands of posts in them, all totalling over 56,000 posts worth of viagra, but mostly porn spam!
I immediately deleted all the forum tables and then deleted the files on there, so there will definitely not be any more traffic of that nature on that site.
Lesson learned: if you install any kind of web forums, make sure you:
- Always update them to the latest version, which often has security fixes and whatnot.
- Don’t actually abandon the forum for a year or two!
- Turn on the flag that requires that every user account be approved before it is allowed to make any posts whatsoever.
Tagged: 8 Random Things
It is been brought to my attention that Charlie has tagX0red me.
The rules:
1. I have to post these rules before I give you the facts.
2. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
3. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
5. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.
My Eight Random Facts/Habits
1. Fact: I still keep up on computer game news via Penny-Arcade and elsewhere even though I can’t remember the last time I even played a computer game.
2. Habit: Similar to Charlie’s, I keep all my movie stubs in an envelop. I’ve been doing this for probably 4 or 5 years.
3. Fact: My wife tells me that older women like me, and this kind of creeps me out (Tiana is the only ‘older’ one allowed! ;). I think it’s because I’ve been told that I look like Kenny Loggins.
4. Habit: I have a habit of trying to change my morning habits — at least the order of doing things. Recently, I started putting on my pants with my left leg first. Sometimes I shave before showing, sometimes I shave after. I take different routes to work depending on my mood…You get the idea.
5. Fact: I’ve had a pair of decent rollerblades for the past 10 years but I think I have only used them no more than 3 times, and those times were all 10 years ago.
6. Fact: I was born with blue eyes but they changed to hazel/green when I was around 5 years old. I got into an argument in Kindergarten with a kid over the color of my eyes and going to smack him, I forgot that I had a pair of ’safety’ scissors in my hand, and I cut his throat a little bit. He was fine– he just had a scar for a few weeks. We ended up becoming best friends for the next few years before I moved to a different school for fourth grade. That is how I found out the color of my eyes changed.
7. Habit: I almost always circle the page number ‘337′ in books that go that high because when looking at that number upside-down, it spells “Lee.” Represent.
8. Fact: I used to fall asleep at night during my Freshman and Sophomore years of college with headphones on listening to metalcore and I had no problem reaching sweet slumber.
And now I tag: Matt Alexander, David Overholt, Scott Savage, and, uh, I can’t think of anybody else at the moment who hasn’t already been tagged who actually reads this who typically engages in such shenanigans, so, if you want, consider yourself tagged; if you don’t want, then that means you’re not tagged!
Pre-post-mid-post ironic backlash
If you have a few t-shirts that you think are ‘cool’ like I do, and you find yourself guilty at taking pleasure in some witty saying or artistic depiction from wearing your latest Threadless design, you may very much appreciate this well-written article:
with the accompanying essential chart.
In Excess
Navin R. Johnson: I know we’ve only known each other four weeks and three days, but to me it seems like nine weeks and five days. The first day seemed like a week and the second day seemed like five days. And the third day seemed like a week again and the fourth day seemed like eight days. And the fifth day you went to see your mother and that seemed just like a day, and then you came back and later on the sixth day, in the evening, when we saw each other, that started seeming like two days, so in the evening it seemed like two days spilling over into the next day and that started seeming like four days, so at the end of the sixth day on into the seventh day, it seemed like a total of five days. And the sixth day seemed like a week and a half. I have it written down, but I can show it to you tomorrow if you want to see it.
